Stop the Bus!

Nehemias and I have a special greeting, pictured above. Every time we see each other, instead of smiling, we do this. I can’t remember how it started, but it has been a part of our greetings for most of the seven years he has been in the therapy program at ASELSI. You may remember Nehemias from the story I shared a few years ago when we gave him his walker. (https://www.jenniferhoines.com/2015/04/) Recently, Nehemias has added big bear hugs as well. He is such a delight and joy. He holds a special place in all of our hearts.

Since the last story, he has continued to progress with his therapy. He now walks without his walker. Because of his cerebral palsy, he walks a little slower and in a different way than you or I might, but it works. However, not everyone rejoices in this achievement as we do.

Last month, Nehemias missed some therapy appointments. When he returned, his dad told us the buses wouldn’t stop for them because it takes them longer to get on and off the bus. This isn’t the first time we’ve heard this. Other families have shared the struggle with using public transportation.

This is not right! Our hearts break for the families and the struggles they face. We’d love to figure out a way to stop the buses. Though our families have the right to use the public transportation system, the laws are not enforced. Pray with us that God would open a door to share with these drivers, whether as a therapy team or as a group of families with children with disabilities. We believe one day those we serve will be able to stop the bus and get the rides they need to our therapy programs.
