A Mom Teaches Us a Lesson on Sacrifice

We have a new addition to the therapy program at ASELSI this year. Although we’re excited Tomasa is back with us after a year off, I’m not talking about her, but a wooden rocking horse (pictured above). When I walked into the clinic, it immediately caught my attention, so I asked Shesita about it.

The rocking horse appeared as a donation from a woman in Quiche who attends the same church as the doctors who work at ASELSI. When she saw pictures of the children using the mats and other toys members of her church had donated last year, she thought about her son’s rocking horse.

Her son loved the horse and she had fond memories of the hours he had spent playing with it. She felt a need to give it away, but the rocking horse held meaning for her and her family. In the end, she determined to make a sacrifice, believing the joy of multiple children outweighed its significance to just her son.

So today, and in the future, when I see Tomasa and our other rehabilitation promoters use the rocking horse with the children at ASELSI, I’ll think of the sacrifice this mom made. It reminds me of the sacrifice of a Father who gave his one and only son for us all.
